Staying classy in New York

Here's a delightful video depicting two gentlemen in suits fighting over a taxi. It's short and sweet and just the thing to make you grateful for cell phone cameras, and taxis, and New York City, and classy men in suits fighting.

This Japanese ad is not what you think it is (SFW)

Only Japan would come out with this provocatively weird edible phallic snack ad.

This ‘2X Di-L-Do’ sexually provocative strawberry snack is depicted with two girls who dance in uniforms of a seemingly innocent high school girl. The commercial is very careful not to mislead viewers as it clearly states at the very beginning in the large Chinese character, that this product is a candy.

45 years of Maple Leafs frustration: 2011-12

At the 2011 NHL Draft, Brian Burke fulfilled his pledge to trade up in the first round, trading the 30th (Rickard Rakell) and 39th (John Gibson) Picks to Anaheim in exchange for the 22nd Pick, which was used to select Tyler Biggs. The move was made more for the sake of making a deal than anything else.  Biggs is a big winger with little offensive skills which make you think he might have still been available for the 39th pick. The Leafs also selected Stuart Percy with 25th Pick.

In the offseason Burke replaced two of Ron Wilson's assistant coaches, hardly a ringing endorsement of the head coach considering Tim Hunter was a long-time assistant to Wilson.   Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin were brought in to help Wilson with defense and specialty teams which were terrible in the previous 3 years.

Burke made two key free agent additions, adding centers Tim Connolly from Buffalo and Philippe Dupuis from Colorado. Connolly was to finally address the hole as centre on the first line.  Dupuis was to help the penalty killing.  Both signings turned out to be busts as Connolly's indifferent play gets him demoted to the third line while Dupuis finishes the season with the Marlies.

The Leafs also added to their blue line by trading Brett Lebda and prospect Robert Slaney to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Cody Franson and picking up the contract of center Matthew Lombardi.  They also picked up John-Michael Liles from Colorado for a second pick which was a huge boost to the powerplay.  Veteran goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere was acquired by the Colorado Avalanche and Burke decided to go with his 2 young goalies, James Reimer and Jonas Gustavsson, despite the fact they barely had 100 NHL games combined.

The Leafs got off to a fast start, winning their first three games and seven of their first ten, finishing October in first place in the Northeast Division, second in the Conference. Phil Kessel was the NHL's leading points scorer with 18, and leading goal scorer with 10. Joffrey Lupul was bounced back from his injury problems and provided Kessel with a skilled linemate for the first time since coming to the Leafs. James Reimer was the starting goaltender for the first five games, but was injured in his next start when Montreal's Brian Gionta struck Reimer in the jaw while fighting for the puck.  That injury pretty much put a nail in the coffin as far as the 2011-12 season.  Reimer never fully recovered. As well, Lupul hurt his shoulder in the last two months of the season which had a significant impact on Kessel's offense.

Early in the season the Leafs power play has dramatically improved, with a 21.6% conversion rate, good for third in the league as of December 17, 2011. However, when shorthanded they had been less efficient with a 73.0% kill rate, the worst in the NHL.

With the Leafs falling out of the playoff race and in the midst of losing 10 of their last 11 games, including a 6 game losing streak, head coach Ron Wilson was fired and replaced by Randy Carlyle on March 2, 2012.  The Leafs once again missed the playoffs while the Los Angeles Kings just squeaked in then went on a 16-4 streak through the playoffs to win their first Stanley Cup.

The Kings ended 45 years of frustration.  For the Leafs there is no end in sight.

Thief steals $100k in rare coins, spends them on pizza and movies

Coin Collecting

A man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing an antique coin collection, estimated to be worth $100,000, after he spent some of the rare coins at a movie theater and pizza restaurant, Woodland police said.  One of the coins was a quarter worth thousands of dollars that the suspect spent at face value, according to investigators.

A Woodland woman, whose mother had collected the coins, reported the collection missing in May. She said the collection, kept in boxes in her garage, included Liberty Head quarters, Morgan dollars and many other coins, some of which date to the early 1800s.

Dakoda Garren, 19, had been a suspect in the theft all along, police said. The victim told police in May that she hired Garren and his live-in girlfriend, Elizabeth Massman, to do some work around her house and that the pair had been the only ones besides family members to get near the coins. Garren, however, denied the allegations at the time and told police they “didn’t have any evidence against him.”

That may have been true — until, according to investigators, he and Massman, also 19, started spending the rare coins. A Battle Ground movie theater reported earlier this month that, on Aug. 17, a man and woman matching the description of Garren and his girlfriend paid for their tickets with old coins from the 1930s. Police recovered five quarters from the theater, each worth between $5 and $68, according to the report.

Then on Thursday, police learned that, also on Aug. 17, a couple spent more rare coins at Rocky’s Pizza in Battle Ground. One of the coins was a Liberty quarter worth between $1,100 and $18,500, police said.

NYC student knocked out by flying mattress

201209_mattress.jpg

A freshman at Kings College NYC was walking to the subway when a futon mattress fell from the sky and knocked him unconscious. Two witnesses say the mattress toppled off the top of a building some 30 stories up. Considering how heavy those futon mattresses can be, this guy's lucky he didn't break his neck—and he knows it. Jesse Scott Owen, the victim, is out of the hospital and tells us he's grateful to be alive.

Owen, who just moved to NYC from Florida three weeks ago, says he was on his way to catch the subway to school when near-death came from above. "I was walking on the left side of the street—which I never do—and as I'm walking I get hit on the head with something. I was knocked out, I don't know for how long. I was awoken by people were putting me up on the mattress, including one man who I think worked for the Stock Exchange."

According to Owen, this man was his Guardian Angel. "I was wondering why I was on the mattress and they explained it had fallen on me and knocked me out! I thought that was kind of hysterical. But everyone's telling me not to move, and this one man in particular kept his arm on me and would not take it off, as you can see in the picture. He took my wallet and phone and called my mother and gave my information to the police."

Owen says two of his classmates happened to be walking by and joined him in the ambulance to New York Downtown hospital, where he got X-Rays, CAT Scans, and pain medication. "My neck still hurts pretty bad," says Owen, who suffered a sprained neck and possibly a herniated disc. And then there's the monetary pain. "Everyone's asking me if I'm going to sue, but I have honestly no clue," Owen insists. "I really don't want to pay these medical bills along with my college tuition."

Mom arrested for letting kids play outdoors

Police arrested a Texas mom for allowing her children to play outside last week, after a neighbor reported to police that the kids were riding scooters around a cul de sac.

Tammy Cooper, who was arrested for child endangerment, insists she was watching her children from a lawn chair in her front yard.  Now, Cooper is suing the La Porte Police Department, the arresting officer and the neighbor who made the call.  A few hours after the neighbor called police, a La Porte policeman showed up to the scene of the “crime” to arrest Cooper.

Cooper spent a night in jail before she was released. Charges were dropped but now Cooper is suing for damages, $7,000 in legal fees.

Jeff Kent hurt in the opening minutes of Survivor, just like the good old days

Jeff Kent appearing in a scene from Survivor. (CBS)
Former MLB second baseman Jeff Kent is no stranger to bizarre injuries, most notably breaking his wrist during spring training in 2002. Kent originally claimed he suffered the break while washing his car, but it eventually surfaced that the injury ocurred while he was popping wheelies on his motorcycle.

So of course, it's weirdly fitting that Kent would be no more than 10 minutes into the season 25 premiere of Survivor when he inexplicably falls into a raft and twists his knee before sliding face-first into the open water. Kent as always is going to tough it out. Hope to add the video when it becomes available.

He also plans to hide his identity since it is well known he made millions playing baseball.  A fellow female survivor immediately recognized him.

Oliver Stone is so subtle

Salma Hayek and Oliver Stone were in London promoting a film when Stone got a little disctracted.  All these years I've tried to be discreet when staring at girls' boobs. Maybe he's on to something.

Lindsay Lohan trumps Amanda Bynes by getting arrested leaving an accident scene

Lindsay Lohan Driving

She just can't seem to stay out of trouble.

Lindsay Lohan was arrested early this morning in Manhattan after her SUV allegedly hit a pedestrian near the Dream Downtown Hotel.  Lohan was pulling her Porsche Cayenne into an alley between the Maritime and Dream Downtown hotels around 12:30 a.m. when she allegedly struck pedestrian Jose Rodriguez, 34.

Rodriguez was leaving his job as a line cook at the Maritime when he encountered the actress. Her car hit him in the leg.  That’s when Lohan allegedly snapped at Rodriguez to get out of the way. The actress was headed to a nightclub inside the Dream Downtown, according to sources close to the hotel.

Lohan was arrested after she left the nightclub at about 2:30 a.m.

Security-camera footage viewed by cops in the hours immediately after the incident was inconclusive, according to law enforcement sources. Lohan could be seen driving past Rodriguez -- close enough to have possibly clipped him, or perhaps missing him all together, law enforcement sources said. Rodriguez can allegedly be seen “running after the car” as Lohan motored away.

She was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and causing injury.

This incident was no doubt intentional to get the spot light back on herself.  Let's face it Amanda Bynes' driving has been getting all the headlines lately.  To top it off her car was impounded by the LAPD for continuing to drive with a suspended licence.  Back to you Amanda.

Fumes from burning American flags kill Pakistani protester

US flag burning over anti-Islam film "Innocence of Muslims" in Dhaka

Around 10,000 people participated in the main rally organised on The Mall to protest the film, Innocence of Muslims. One of the participants of the rally, Abdullah Ismail, passed away after he was taken to Mayo Hospital. Witnesses said he had complained of feeling unwell from the smoke from US flags burnt at the rally.

He later passed away, though an exact cause of death was not released.

Talk about irony.

There are no openly gay athletes in any of the 4 major team sports.

It comes as no surprise that in 2012 with gay marriages, gay politicians, gay clergy, etc. there are still no gay pro athletes. The stigma still exists in the arena and stadium dressing rooms around the continent so no one feels safe enough to come out. Just look at the rookie hazing ritual that still goes on within the Blue Jays organization.

The stupid slur by Yunel Escobar was never meant to do anyone harm but it illustrates why no one dare come out. And sure Escobar meant no harm but for those teammates, opponents, officials and fans present last Sunday at the Rogers Centre, his stupid stunt couldn't have made them feel good.

You would expect better from a millionaire athlete who is almost 30 years old.

New York hotel toilets visible from the street

The Standard Hotel gives a whole new meaning to the term “poop deck.”

Restroom users at the Boom Boom Room club on the 18th floor are completely visible from the street below as they do their business, thanks to 10-foot, floor-to-ceiling windows.

The toilet-sitters get wondrous skyline views. But the windows work both ways — much to the chagrin of relief-seekers after they’re told what could be seen from the street.

“The view outside is exciting, but the view inside is frightening,” said David Langdon, 55, from Melbourne, Australia. “I saw people waving at me! Sitting on the royal throne, you don’t expect a public viewing!”

You especially don’t expect a public viewing considering there are no warning signs alerting customers that they’re starring in their own reality PV show.

François Allaire proves you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear

François Allaire perhaps the best goaltending coach on the planet has worked with some great goalies among them Patrick Roy, Jean-Sébastien Giguère, Ilya Bryzgalov and Jonas Hiller. But his reputation has taken a hit since coming to Toronto and having to work with Vesa Toskala, Jonas Gustavsson, Joey McDonald, a past-his-prime Giguère, James Reimer, Ben Scrivens and Jussi Rynnas.

His solution was to quit. Something Elliotte Freidman had predicted would happen back in April. Once again Friedman's sources have been accurate. Allaire is not accepting all the blame for the deplorable shape of the Leafs' goaltending. On the contrary, he is blaming the other coaches on the team and suggests that the coaching staff is dysfunctional.

Now it shouldn't come as a surprise that there is discourse in the Maple Leafs dressing room. There has been plenty of that over the past 45 years. Is that the case here because he would have been working with Randy Carlyle this season who he worked with in Anaheim? Or this just sour grapes from someone trying to find a scapegoat? I have this sinking feeling that with or without a lockout the Brian Burke era will spiral wildly to an end this season. Perhaps this is the first guy to jump ship. At least he didn't blame his problems on the media.

Man reported possible burglary after finding vibrator in bathroom that didn't belong to his wife

Police responded to a Murfreesboro, Tennessee apartment in reference to a possible burglary after a man found an adult toy on top of the bathroom counter that reportedly did not belong to his wife.

“Upon arrival, I made contact with the complainant (who) advised that when he returned home from work, he discovered a vibrator on the bathroom sink,” reported Officer Chris Norville, who responded just after 10 p.m. to the apartment in Haynes Manor .

“(The man) advised he called his wife and confirmed it was not hers,” Norville wrote in a Murfreesboro Police Department incident report. When the man’s wife insisted she did not own the item, he became concerned that someone had broken into the residence, at which point he decided to contact the police.

“He stated nothing appeared to have been stolen or disturbed,” Norville reported. “(The man) said the door was locked when he returned, (and) the only sign that someone had been in the apartment was the vibrator left behind in the bathroom.”

If my wife ever finds my blowup sex doll, Sophie, I'm also going to claim innocent. Someone must have broken in, had sex with his blowup companion and left her behind. For sure she will believe it.

More nude pics of Kate Middleton, someone call a piling on penalty

Does the entire world have topless pics of the Duchess of Cambridge? First Closer magazine, then the Irish Daily Star and now Chi magazine. I'm not sure how the Royals intend on enforcing censorship around the world. Sure they can intimidate the British press but that isn't going to fly internationally. A simple solution. Avoid taking your clothes off outside of the Royal boudoir.

Those pics are so grainy the photographer must have been standing in Algeria taking those photographs. Supposedly the photo below shows the vantage point of the photographer and where the partially dressed future Queen of England was situated, less than 800 metres away.

By the way Kate does have a great backside.

Upset about the NHL lockout, how about some Paulina Gretzky in a bikini week

Bikini Sunday

Belinda

Lockout is here with no end in sight

It's not hard to pick a villian in this dispute. The NHL owners led by Gary Bettman got everything they wanted out of the players 7 years ago, a salary cap, salary roll back of 24% and the head of Bob Goodenow's head on a platter. So here we are with another league shutdown just so the owners can extract more out of the players. Don't expect any financial concessions made to translate into lower ticket prices. They are going straight into the owners' pockets.

The flurry of signings before the contract expired tells you all you want to know about how unworkable that contract was. They could have waited until a new agreement was in place considering most of the signings were extensions. It's like the league is screwing the players just because they can.
